Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, born in 1832, who taught mathematics at Christ Church, Oxford. He was also a gifted photographer.

On a boat trip in 1862 he made up a story for Alice Liddell, the young daughter of the dean of his college, and her sisters. Alice asked him to write it down, and it became Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, published in 1865. Through the Looking-Glass followed in 1871. He died in 1898.
