A baby wanders out of the night into a wolves' cave, and Mother Wolf keeps him and names him Mowgli. He grows up taught by Baloo the bear and Bagheera the black panther, while the tiger Shere Khan waits to claim him. Rudyard Kipling's 1894 book holds the Mowgli stories and others too: Rikki-tikki-tavi the mongoose, Kotick the white seal, and Toomai of the elephants, each with its song.
