A ruined stone farmhouse among bare, windswept moors under a pale sky
Painting: Frank Southgate, The Moor, Haworth (1917)

A stranger takes a house on the Yorkshire moors and, trapped by snow at his landlord's farm, spends a night in a room where a ghostly hand reaches through the window. The housekeeper tells him why: Heathcliff, a foundling brought home by old Mr. Earnshaw, grew up loving Catherine Earnshaw, lost her, and spent his life taking revenge on both their families. Emily Brontë's only novel appeared in 1847, a year before she died.
