Oliver Twist is born in a workhouse, an orphan from his first breath. Starved with the other boys, he dares to ask for more gruel, and is sold off as an apprentice to an undertaker. He runs away to London, where the Artful Dodger takes him to Fagin, an old man who teaches boys to pick pockets. Charles Dickens's 1838 novel of London's poor, its thieves, and the boy who stays good among them.
